Share "How and when to dethatch your lawn"
Dethatching your lawn can sometimes be a rough process for your lawn to handle but sometimes it is a necessary one. Here are some ideas from Dawn West from All About Lawns to let you know how and when you should think about dethatching.
Thatch is not always a bad thing, but it will be soon
Any amount less than 1/2 Inch is not a bad amount of thatch. It has the ability hold in moisture during times of drought and high heat. However, more than 1/2 Inch can make it so your grass can’t breathe and may not be able to get enough water. To measure, stick something in the ground like a screwdriver or a pencil and see how much thatch there is by measuring it with a ruler or tape measure.
Deciding what to use
You have a few different options to choose when dethatching your lawn, manually or with a power dethatching machine. For smaller or medium-sized lawns, you might just want to go with the manual option due to the fact that it is less obtrusive to you lawn. We will look more closely at power dethatching in a few moments.
When to dethatch
Whichever option you do choose, make sure it is the time when your lawn is most likely to recover. Times of drought or a heat wave are not optimal times and might leave your lawn in bad shape for longer than you’d like.
