'Sweet Summer Love' Clematis

Deep red buds open to cranberry-violet flowers that nearly cover the deep green foliage, delivering a spectacular display while perfuming the summer garden. Blooms over a month earlier than others and often continues well into autumn after the prolific first flush.

Clematis is a lovely partner for a climbing rose to extend the season of fragrance and color. If space is limited, grow in a large container, providing support such as obelisk or trellis. Twine up and over wood or metal arches at gates and entries. Drape over fences in narrow side yards for short range view of flowers from windows. Traditional plant to twine into skeleton of dead trees and shrubs. Best planted up close near outdoor living spaces where color and fragrance can be enjoyed.

Prefers average, evenly moist, well-drained soil. Provide support such as trellis or arbor. Apply a slow-release balanced fertilizer and an organic mulch to keep the roots cool, avoiding the immediate crown.Pruning time: group iii type: blooms on new growth; prune back to 2 ft. in late winter early spring.
